GAMELOG

Hall of fame
Among the games that I've finished, these are the 10/10 ones that will stay forever in my mind as masterpieces.

NIER:AUTOMATA
⍟⍟⍟⍟⍟

Cyborgs fighting robots to save mankind. If you're familiar with Yoko Taro's works, you know how crazy and unexpected things get, and this is definetly his best work so far. The gameplay will change it up on you in flawless ways, the soundtrack is amazing, the story is sensational, and on top of it all, NIER:Automata is ALWAYS thinking outside the box. It's one of the games that will get your jaw on the floor thinking "woah, how did they thought of that?!" before you start crying.

Tip: There's a lot of endings, but only one of them is the final. Keep playing until you simply can't, and you won't miss it. Also, don't play it on a pirated copy (I don't care about legality/morality when it comes to piracy, but just trust me on this one, okay?)

HELLBLADE: SENUA'S SACRIFICE
⍟⍟⍟⍟⍟

Superb single player experience. Set in the late 8th century, you play as Senua, a girl on a journey to save the soul of her lover. Throughout the game you learn more and more about the protagonist, her "curse" that makes her see things and hear voices, the traumas she carries with her and many more. The game will occasionally break the 4th wall and use the things that happen to Senua as game mechanics in unique and creative ways, to fully imerse you in her place. They did such a good job on this, that sometimes you forget you're holding a controller and playing a videogame. A very special game, with a very special story about grief, mental health and self knowledge.

Tip: Use headphones for this one.

SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY
⍟⍟⍟⍟⍟

The best Mario game that has ever existed. Yes, you heard that right, it's THAT good.
It's like they gathered the best things that came out on different Mario games over the decades, and combined all of those here.
Perfectly flawless gameplay, with fluid animations on tight detailed movements, new mechanics that unveil things you didn't even thought it was possible to do, greatest post game I've ever played, charismatic characters on worlds that could've win awards on level design, all of this happening with one of the greatest videogame soundtracks of all time playing in the background.
It might be challenging as fuck, but it's never boring. Higly recommended.

Finished
Games that I've played till the end. Saw the credits and everything. Maybe even platinum'd some. I'll add a mini review to each game whenever possible, but some of them were finished such a long time ago, that I may or may not remember enough stuff about it. If that's the case, I won't go into much detail on that title, as it wouldn't be very accurate or fair if I did it anyway.

URBAN CHAOS: RIOT RESPONSE
★★★★☆
(Finished at 18.03.2024)

I wish I came across this title when I was a child. My cousin and I were glued to our PS2s, and there was a time where we would search for unique different games. One of those, was a good police themed shooter! All we had was from the perspective of the criminals, or soldiers, but never regular cops on urban enviroment. Younger us would've LOVED this game! It has all those details that would make any PS2 owner's jaw drop at the time. What do you mean you can command firefighters to rescue civilians trapped inside a flaming building? What do you mean you can rescue hostages with a slow-mo near perfect shot? What do you mean you can't simply kill, but must taze an arrest the gang leaders for info?!
Urban Chaos RR is kind of dated, like how you have to scroll through each weapon to find the one you want, and if you missed, scroll through everything again (while your character comically grab and hide everything in it's pockets over and over) and it can be rough around the edges in some levels. It has a story, but it's VERY corny, which I usually don't mind, but all the exaggerated US patriotic story about a badass white cop as a hero is just kind of annoying to me. I do fuck with the live action cutscenes tho! Those were dope.
Despite it's flaws, it's one hell of a game! Outside of the plot/presentation, it aged pretty well, and to this day, the whole experience remains 100% fun until the very end, with the last stage featuring a cool twist on things. I can see myself replaying it on harder difficulties on a near future!

KILL.SWITCH
★★★★☆
(Finished at 29.02.2024)

While a lot shorter than I expected, this is way more thought out and polished than I've anticipated! One of the first games to use cover shooting and blind fire as main mechanics on a third person shooter, and it works like a charm.
It's way shorter than it should be, the plot is very simple with little care to how they present it to the player, leaving lots of confusion on what actually is happening, and things like soundtrack/sound design/level design are generic. But the gameplay is SO fluid and fun, that it's easy to just ignore all the rest and focus on the game itself! It's by no means a stealth game, but it rewards strategy and positioning. It's also not a Michael Bay type cinematic shooter with lots of explosions and adrenaline, while still being very thrilling on the combat side. Weapons work well, aiming and shooting are simple but efective, and it's very satisfactory when you're able to pull out some elite looking cover based kills, like a real life soldier.

Way ahead of it's time! It not only aged well, but it also deserves the title of hidden gem. I recommend!

APE ESCAPE 2
★★★☆☆
(Finished at 26.02.2024)

Of all the three main entries of the Ape Escape series, this is the weakest one. It's not bad by any means, but while the first one was groundbreaking with lots of new stuff going on, Ape Escape 2 feels more like a rehash of the concept for the next generation console at the time. It ends up being pretty, but kind of blend and uninspired. It's still fun, and they were able to perfect what they were going for in the third installment of the series, but if you look at the bigger picture nowadays, there's no denying that Ape Escape 2 falls into the shadow of both it's predecessor and successor. It might've been enough for the time, but it's nothing special now.

SAMURAI WESTERN
★★★☆☆

The premise on this one is cool! A samurai chasing a japanese enemy that escaped on a boat, arrives in a small american city during the western era. In a search for your rival, you need to hack and slash your way through cowboys and outlaws, deflecting their bullets and evading their explosives. Eventually you get caught up in the city's business, and discover that your target has a history there.

I would like to see that plot through a more serious lens, but that's not the case here lol. Everything is over the top, it's early 2000's japanese campy at it's finest. Gameplay is smooth as fuck, very fast and linear, aged quite well. The whole thing it's kind of short, but you unlock other challenges and game modes after beating the game to get a solid replayability factor. It's not going to win any awards, but it's very neat!

MORTAL KOMBAT: SHAOLIN MONKS
★★☆☆☆

This one aged well where it counts. Combat, gameplay and platforming are all nice and fluid, doesn't take very long to beat and the bossfights are fun (except for the very last one, since it's still an MK game at the end of the day).

However, the parts that suck, REALLY suck. The level design is bad, the upgrade system makes your character too powerful waaay too soon in the game, dialogues and voice acting are awful, and the unskippable cutscenes make the pacing goes south every fucking time. If there's a way to revitalize the MK series, I would bet my money on a Shaolin Monks remake, with better graphics, cutscenes and dialogues. Since the story works ok for this universe, it has a lot of potential (specially with the latest reboot), to create a cinematic AAA experience, with support for online co-op, and a solid storytelling. They won't do it, but hey, a man can dream.

MIDNIGHT CLUB 3 DUB EDITION REMIX
★★★★★

BRING MIDNIGHT CLUB BACK! BRING IT BACK, YOU COWARDS!!!!!

This is the one. This is the PINNACLE of street illegal racing games. It feels like I'm in one of the first Fast & Furious movies, back when they were good, you know?
While it is a little lackluster when it comes to the story, that's not really an issue here. It's an arcade racing game, it has strenghts where it counts.
Solid soundtrack, great tuning (until you reach the exotic cars, for some reason), cool maps, but most of all, the biggest vehicle variety I've ever seen, a near perfect level design, with SUPERB non-linear gameplay inside the races. Even the motorcycles are a joy to ride, with the weight distribution mechanic!
This game has amazing graphics for the PS2, and you can go even further! I've played it on PCSX2 emulator, with HD textures, upscaled resolution (1080p) and 16:9/HUD fixes. You can even do 60fps, if your graphics card can handle it!

It's a very tough game, and I kinda wanted it to be a little bit shorter, so it doesn't overstay it's welcome, but from the very beggining all the way to the credits, it was FUN.

Dropped
I tried. Fuck these games.

NANOBREAKER
☢☢☢☢☢

I'm a complete sucker for campy 2000's japanese games. I did 100% of Drakengard on the PS2. Jankyness, to me, is charming, and usually the vibes are enough. If even I couldn't stand this game, that really means something.

It's easy to not take this game seriously. Everything from the story, to the characters, to the combat, to the enemies, they are all cranked up to 100, BUT, the vibes are there. I can almost smell the scent of my brand new PS2, directly from 2004, when I'm booting this game. It's a pity that the core thing that make or break a game for me, sucks so much here: the gameplay.
Even Drakengard had better gameplay than this. It's awful to the point where, it sucked all the joy of my experience, because you find yourself replaying the same long ass paths, because at some point, the jumping mechanic let you down on a basic platform system, and you died. Or maybe your evade/block didn't work the way it was supposed to, and then you died. Maybe the enemies pinned you with so many simultaneous attacks, creating a scene where you couldn't really get back up, let alone fight back, before you died. Go all the way back, by the way, because the checkpoints are so far from each other, you end up forgetting the last time you saved. Frustrating.

KINGDOM HEARTS II
☢☢☢☢☢

Fuck that series man, I tried. I've played through the first one and it was kind of cool, then I WATCHED hours worth of cutscenes on youtube for the next two games (Chain of Memories and 385/2 Days), just so I could understand what's going on, since those games have interesting stories, but their gameplay were boring and lame, and then I would finally get to this title my friends were saying it's the best one. "You should just hang in there, everything will get better once you get to KH2". BULLSHIT! It's so. fucking. boring. I was like, 4 hours in, and the pacing was awful, the combat was lame, the story felt overly complicated for no reason, the characters were making me cringe on a regular basis, the different mechanics here and there felt more like a chore than fun side stuff. Eventually I've felt that I had enough, this series is not for me, and to be honest, I still don't understand how this is held in such high regards by everyone.

RACING LAGOON

If you don't mind the late 90's bizarre CGI models, you can see that this is definetly a hidden gem, full of potential. An arcade street racing game, with JRPG elements, made by Square. With a full fledged storyline, and a customization system that encourages looting rivals for parts after dueling them. It's pretty cool, and it controls nicely, the only reason that I've dropped this one is because the bad parts of JRPGs are there as well. Like random unavoidable combat encouters when you're free roaming through the city. You're trying to get to a story related race, or a point of interest in the map, but if a car's headlights notices you, you have to stop what you're doing, and duel them. In this game, that means a full on race, you can't back down. If this kind of thing is fine with you, by all means, try Racing Lagoon! But I'm not an RPG guy, mainly because of bullshit like this, so I'm out.

Online?

I don't really play online. I'm mostly into well thought out single player experiences, or multiplayer/co-op with my friends. Sometimes I'll make an exception for like, rhythm and fighting games, because then victory depends on my skills only, and I don't have to deal with anyone else but my opponent, who can't listen or speak to me. So any E-Sportsy-teamworky-voice chat type of game is a hard pass.
